OSIT Registration

Introduction of OSIT

Oral Sensorimotor Integration Therapy (OSIT) is a specialized approach that focuses on the development of sensory processing and oral sensory motor skills necessary for Communication, Speech & Feeding. Movement and sensory input are closely interconnected, as sensory feedback from movement influences motor development. The mouth serves as a central point for sensory organisation, where sensory input can either have an organising or a disorganising effect on motor output and overall function. Sensory processing refers to our ability to take in information from both our internal environment and the external world, organise this information, and use it to respond in a well regulated manner.

Difficulty in processing sensory input can lead to behavioural issues, hearing problems, feeding challenges, emotional difculties, and self-esteem issues (Roche et al., 2011 ). Sensorimotor integration is a complex process within the central nervous system where sensory information from multiple sources is rapidly and selectively processed in different areas of the cerebral cortex (association areas) to produce task-specic motor responses. Oral sensorimotor integration refers specically to the nervous system's ability to process and organise sensory information from the mouth and surrounding areas, enabling appropriate motor responses essential for eating, swallowing, and speech production.

Oral stimulation techniques have long been used with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults with neuromotor and neurodegenerative disorders. The purpose of OSIT is to prepare the mouth for feeding, decrease oral defensiveness, increase sensory awareness, and improve speech output and clarity. The tools and methods used in OSIT are tailored to the individual's sensory needs to facilitate the development of targeted motor skills, addressing key factors such as postural stability, muscle tone, sensory processing, and oral sensory motor skills. Importantly, no extraneous oral sensory input is introduced during therapy to ensure a focused and effective response (Bahr and Johnson, 2010).

This course on Oral Sensorimotor Integration Therapy (OSIT) aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and techniques involved in developing sensory and motor coordination for improved feeding, swallowing, speech clarity and Communications.

Principles of OSIT

The therapy is based on the concept of sensorimotor integration, which means that the brain must effectively process sensory information from the mouth, lips, tongue, and jaw to generate precise motor responses for speech, feeding, and swallowing. OSIT helps individuals who have difficulty coordinating oral sensory input with motor output.

Key Principles of OSIT

  • Sensory Modulation & Awareness - Enhancing an individual's ability to recognize and appropriately respond to sensations in the mouth.
  • Motor Control & Strengthening - Improving coordination, endurance, and strength of oral muscles.
  • Oral Reflex Integration -Addressing primitive reflexes that interfere with mature oral-motor control.
  • Muscle Memory & Articulation - Training muscles for precise placement and movement essential for clear speech and efficient swallowing.

Course Goals

1.Feeding and Swallowing Improvement

  • Assists individuals with difficulties in chewing, swallowing, and managing food textures.
  • Enhances tongue movement, lip closure, and jaw stability.
  • Reduces oral defensiveness to certain textures and temperatures.

2.Speech Clarity and Articulation

  • Strengthens oral muscles (lips, tongue, jaw) to improve phoneme placement
  • Focuses on tongue placement for correct sound production.
  • Develops muscle memory for natural speech patterns.

3.Flow and Fluency of Speech

  • Improves speech rhythm and coordination.
  • Helps individuals with speech apraxia plan and program smooth oral movements.

4.Reduction of Oral Defensiveness & Hypersensitivity

  • Techniques to improve tolerance to different textures and movements in the mouth.
  • Supports activities like brushing teeth, eating, and speech exercises.

5.Increasing Oral Sensory Awareness

  • Enhances sensation in oral structures for better saliva .

Who can Benefits from OSIT ?

  • Individuals with Sensory Processing Disorders (Autism, SPD, ADHD).
  • Children with speech delays, Apraxia, or Articulation disorders.
  •  Individuals with feeding and swallowing difficulties.
  • Patients recovering from neurological impairments (stroke, brain injury).
